2015-2016 Board Candidate Bios

Board elections for 2015-2016 swim season take place Sunday, August 23, 2015. Below are bios of those members who have been nominated for our open positions.

Luis Kranwinkel

I began my career when I joined the US Army as a Combat Medic fresh out of high school. While having the honor of serving the USA, I got to experience many great opportunities in leadership. Teamwork, Leadership, and accountability are amongst some of the things that I had to learn quickly in order to adapt to my infantry unit. While serving I came up in the ranks of leadership and soon found that I was time to leave the service and begin a career as a civilian. After serving 8 years as an enlisted soldier I was honorably discharged from Ft. Meade , where I decided to settle with my soul mate and begin a family. After getting married I decided to go back to school to become an RN. After completing nursing school I began working in the intensive care unit (ICU) right out of school, due to my experience as a combat medic, I was given the opportunity to become an ICU nurse, after a year in the ICU, I was again approached with an exciting opportunity to open a first ever clinic within Johns Hopkins for non-English speaking patients. Once the clinic was successfully started and sustained I return to my passion as a critical care nurse. While in the ICU, I moved up the ranks within the department and was allotted the charge nurse role in the ICU. While running charge one day I was asked if I wanted to be an assistant manager on the stroke unit within the facility, I of course jumped at the opportunity. After 2 years as an assistant manager, and taking lead in making sure the Department passed The Joint Commission inspection, the Hospital as a certified stroke unit I moved on to become a nurse manager in a private nursing company within Baltimore. While being a full time father and full time employee,  I decided to obtain my Masters in Science and Nursing (MSN). After a year as a manger and successfully building the CNA program and clientele,  I again saw an opportunity to serve our veterans by joining the team within the Veterans Affair in Washington DC, as a critical care nurse back in the ICU. After completing my MSN I was again allotted the opportunity to transfer departments and help grow a Home Telehealth program. I now manage a panel of patients and numerous recognition programs for our veterans while assisting the Director of the department with leadership opportunities’. I would be honored to once again serve my community pool and being a leader, friend, and acquaintance, I promise to be available whenever needed and look for the pool to stay within our community while growing as a part of our community.


Phelps Prescott

Member of the pool since 1996.
Teacher at Arundel High School since 1999.
Managed the pool from 1997-1999.

Being a part of the Four Seasons community, a Social Studies Teacher at Arundel High School and a member of the pool now for a long time I thought it was time to give back to the pool. With my children Brian and Michelle being at the age where they are “living” at the pool, it was time to run for a position on the Board.  I know how the pool operates thanks to my experience running the pool many years ago. With my wife, Wendy, heavily involved with socials and a former Vice President of the Board, I believe we are all invested in the success of the pool. Therefore, I would appreciate your vote for Vice President of the Pool Board.  Thank you.

Facilities Director

David Mogel (Incumbent)

My name is David Mogel and I am the current facilities person. Most of you may have seen me at the pool over the years fixing items like the umbrellas, picking up trash, or whatever needs to be done.
I have been involved in many projects at the pool including the snack bar fans, the Esposito Pavilion, and bathroom renovations just to mention a few.

I look forward to improving the pool by providing the guidance and knowledge that I have learned over the past 3 years in my current position.

Swim Director

Kim Champagne (Incumbent)

I have been the Dive Team Director for Waugh Chapel Swim Club for 7 years. In this position, I continue to hire highly qualified and dedicated coaches, which has led the Sea Dogs to a number of undefeated seasons, including the last 4 in a row! I absolutely LOVE the swim program and would love to watch it to continue to grow.

Communications Director (vacant)

Kelly Kotche

About me and why I’d like to be the WCSC Communications Director:

My name is Kelly Kotche and I would like to run for the position of Communications Director on the Waugh Chapel Swim Club Board of Directors.

Good communication needs to be a top priority so that members are well informed and apprised of activities and events the pool has to offer.

I have a long history of service to the pool already, serving as the Membership Director for three years – 2012-2015. This role has already given me experience in sending email notices and newsletters to the membership, and keeping members updated on WCSC events via the website, Facebook, signs, flyers and bulletins. I often assist the WCSC Socials Director with pool events, including creating flyers and tickets for the crab feast and luau.

Having two sons on the Dive Team, I am a very active member and volunteer as a “Dive Mom.” All summer long, I am a frequent patron (at least on weekends); I miss very few social events and oftentimes serve as a volunteer as well.

Why am I qualified?

I have over 20 years of experience in a communications role working for the American Bakers Association (ABA). I have diverse skills that cover both digital and print communication.

I believe my skill set and past experience serving on the WCSC Board make me a good candidate for the WCSC Communications Director.  I have many goals and objectives for taking communication and promotion of the pool’s events and activities to a new level.

Socials Director

Meredith Long (Incumbent)

My name is Meredith Long and I have served as the Socials Director for the Waugh Chapel Swim Club (WCSC) for the past four pool seasons.  In this role, I have had the pleasure of planning and implementing all the social activities at the pool.

Some of the activities I have organized include:

  • Craft days for kids
  • Movie Night
  • Teen/Tween Night
  • Wine in the Woods
  • Annual Crab Feast
  • Paint Night
  • Annual Luau
  • Aqua Fitness Classes
  • Birthday and Team Parties

The social activities I have implemented over the pas four years have grown in popularity and attendance each year – everyone looks forward to the annual crab feast and luau and the new Paint Nights are a huge success. Giving kids something to do and making them feel like they have their own special activities is important too, and this is carried out with movie nights, craft days, Painting for Kids, ice cream socials, popcorn just for the heck of it and other special activities.

I would like to continue for another two-year term in the role as Socials Director so that I can take WCSC fun to an even higher level.

Appointed Positions

Treasurer

Ronald Shapard (Incumbent)

I am a graduate of Towson University and an accountant with more than 25 years of not-for-profit experience. I currently work as the controller for a foreign policy think tank in Washington, DC. I have been the treasurer for the Waugh Chapel Swim Cub since 2009 where I have overseen the conversion from cash basis accounting to the accrual basis. I have also updated the record-keeping process and helped the pool to begin to accept credit card payments.

My wife, Stephanie, and I enjoy bringing our two young children  –  Kathryn and Christopher  –  to the pool and we all look forward to its continued success.

Secretary

Kathi Brandt (Incumbent)

My name is Kathi Brandt and I am being nominated for Secretary of the Board.  I have been an active member of Waugh Chapel Swim Club since 2008.  My family includes myself, husband, Mark, and four children (19 down to 6).  I have been involved with Waugh Chapel as an adult/family but also was a member many years ago as a teen.

I am a mostly Stay-at-Home mom to my children. I teach part time with Anne Arundel County Public Schools as a Home Hospital Teacher (6 – 18 hours a week) throughout the school year.  My summers are filled with time at the pool for fun and participating on the dive team with all 3 of my younger children, as well as participating in the Masters Swim Program for myself.  I will leave my summer free from most obligations to deal with any issues of the pool, as well as to avail myself to the monthly meetings throughout the year.

I have previous experience as member of community groups through my participation in TAAAC (Teachers Association of  Anne Arundel County) and various committes at my local church, Faith Community Church.

I feel I am well equipped to deal with taking notes in an accurate matter, attending meetings, and being accountable for my own actions as well as ensure that sufficient documentation exists to liking of the board. Thank You.

Member-at-Large

Cathi Mellos (Incumbent)

I have worked 30 years as a government IT contractor, 25 of those years as a project manager. This has given me experience with managing several projects at once, multi-tasking, and the ability to work with executive management and staff to resolve most issues. I have been on the board as the Member-at-Large for 4 years. During these four years, I have assisted in membership and successfully worked with the software vendor to program and enter each and every member and their family into the new entry system.

My husband, Alex, and I are the parents of two daughters and we live right behind the pool, allowing me to be readily available at a moments notice when WCSC calls.  I look forward to the opportunity to continue as part of the board and assist in any capacity that is required of the Member-at-Large.
